Tony Gilroy, the showrunner for Andor had always envisioned it as a two part series where in the final part, Diego Luna's main character Cassian Andor will be taken up to the point where he gets introduced in Rogue One, the Star Wars movie.
Even with a tight plotline like this, there is a lot of scope of development when it comes to the story of Andor. Though the details of season 2 have been mostly kept under wraps, here is everything that is known so far about the second season of the Star Wars series.
What is the possible Release Date of Andor Season 2?
Due to production delays because of the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the initial plan to release Andor season 2 in the second half of 2024 has been postponed.
The production for the 12-episode season had begun in November 2022 and had partially continued even after the beginning of the WGA strike.
However, in July 2023, when the actors also joined the writers’ strike to demand fair and equitable treatment from the studios, the production halted completely.
In January 2024 the production resumed and things were wrapped up by February 2024. Since Tony Gilroy had mentioned that post production of this season would take about a year, it can be expected that Andor Season 2 will premiere sometime during the first quarter of 2025.
What is the Plot of Andor Season 2?
The plotline of Andor Season 2 has been kept under tight vigilance and information is scarce. However, some lingering plot points from Andor Season 1 can give an idea about what season 2 might be dealing with.
Tony Gilroy, in a conversation with Rolling Stone already mentioned that things will be "very different" when the show comes back. He also added,
"The first year is really about him becoming, and the last line of this tranche of 12 episodes will sum up where we’ve been trying to get to. And we come back a year later. It’ll be very different. The next four years [of story] are not about becoming a revolutionary. They’re about learning to be a leader and how difficult it is to put the alliance together and what happens to people who are the original gangsters versus the establishment and a lot of different other issues."
Moreover, with Luthen's team now having Cassian, he will get to have first hand experience of building up the Rebel Alliance and what it becomes. Through this storyline, Andor Season 2 is very likely to feature the first encounter between Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma, Luthen’s close ally and the titular character of the show.
Season 2 will also have a new narrative structure as for every three episodes, there will be a skipping forward of a year. However, Gilroy has assured that this time jump will not make the show any less detailed, saying,
"What becomes interesting is now we can play the negative space. When you jump a year, what happened in between? You know the people, you know what their trajectory was. It’s energizing."
With Gilroy confirming that season 2 will tie in more directly with the Star Wars saga, fans wait eagerly to see the story unfold.
